Zepher And Chad
The call we had a week ago about our loaner herd breaking out of the pasture and eating the flowers in the neighbors yard was a fortuitous kick that got us motivated to get the loaner herd home.
Once home we unloaded the three bred heifers, Topanga and her two month old calf Donna. Topanga was acting like she was in heat and sought out the herd sire as soon as her feet were out of the stock trailer. Breaking through that fence at the neighbor farm may have been her way of getting a little attention.
We knew that calving was not too far off for the three heifers and were happy to have them safely on the farm where we can keep an eye on the soon-to-be first time moms. It looked like they were all a few weeks to a month from calving but #7 Zepher surprised us with bull calf on 10/24/2019. SAF Chad weighed in at 62 lbs., a good sized critter for a first time mother. His sire is Prowler.
Zepher got right down to business and had Chad all licked off and fed before we knew that she had delivered a baby.
On the second day she took Chad through the river crossing and over to the rest of the herd.
Zepher and Chad are still spending a little time at the edges of main herd while the baby is getting a little more stable footing but they move from pasture to pasture with the group. Soon Chad will be cavorting with the older calves and fitting right in.
I didn’t have to follow Zepher and Chad through the water, but my Muck boots would have kept my feet warm and dry if I did. And so a new birthing season begins. And such a good start with Zepher as a first-time mother not needing you at all!
