Lavender Butterflies

Small orange butterflies on lavender plant

The pollinator row that we have outside the window by the dining room table has been extremely busy this last week.

The roses are still blooming, the Daphne’s long lasting blooms are still fragrant and showing white blossoms, the sage continues to blossom, but it is the lavender that has been attracting hundreds of small, orange butterflies.

The lavender is usually harvested by this time of year. Marilyn likes to make essential oils and sachets, but this year has kept all of us too busy to get around to cutting the plants.

Our failure to cut all the blooms off the plants has created a haven for all the bees, hummingbirds and especially these tiny butterflies. They have been coming in droves to sip the nectar and visit for a while.

I tried to get a count on the pretty little visitors, it was not an easy task with all the flitting around. It was just before the sun dipped down below the hillside and the plants were in full sun when I counted, I am positive there were more than 100 butterflies at that one time, and they have been going at the plants all week.
