Beyond the FarmCattle

Busy Day

Usually I try to have my posts completed and scheduled to release in the early morning hours, today it was just not possible.
Last night, when I normally would have been completing my post for this morning, we were busy moving cattle around in order to have things ready for today. We had to first move the two remaining yearling bulls from the bull pen into a barn pen alongside the three heifers in the show barn. Then we had to move the batch of show animals which consisted of the bull Prowler, four cows with their calves and the three yearling heifers out into the bull pen and lock up the gates so the would stay out of our way.
Then we headed across the river to the main herd and sorted out the big herd sire Renaissance and Suzy Q. Suzy had lost her calf recently to a gang of coyotes (she is also the mother with the udder of oversized teats). We had intended on removing her from our herd when we weaned her baby, but this last blow moved her up on the list.
After getting Renaissance and Suzy Q loaded into the stock trailer and moved across the river and across the road, we installed them in the show barn where the group of show animals had been before we moved them into the bull pen.
With everyone in their new places, it was time to feed. The animals were still kind of skittery at first but calmed down and ate well. Early this morning, before the sun was up, we fed the animals again before loading Renaissance, Suzy Q and the yearling bull, Chief into the stock trailer and sent them on their way.
Much of the rest of the day will be spent, putting new groups of animals into the different barns and pens.
