The name of this western United States  native is Sweet After Death. They have been popping up in the woods and are distinguished by their tall spikes that have a bottle brush type of flower at the top.
According to the USDA plant website, they are also known by the names Vanilla Leaf and Deer Foot. Humans may not be sure what the pretty plants are, but the plants are not confused at all.
