Did She Or Didn't She

Mike was away from the farm for a few days, he knew that  Blackie would calve first and she did less than 12 hours after he had left.  When I told him the news he stated firmly that “Rosalie would be the next one to calve so keep an eye on her.”
That was easy for him to say while he was not here. The weather had just turned to be the warmest days of the year so far and all the herd, mothers, babies, herd sire, and mothers-to-be all headed for the thickest, coolest trees. It was hard to check on any one critter and counting them nearly impossible since they would not stay in one place. It was like counting wiggling earthworms in a darkened room, did I count that one already?
I thought I had counted 17 big ones and 15 little ones. That meant that Rosalie calved. But I wasn’t sure, most of the black cows look the same in the dark and the same goes for the bunch of calves that did not cotton to someone skulking around them as they were resting. Some would skitter away before I could get a good look, I tried my best not to spook them.
It wasn’t til the next day when Rosalie stepped out into the open with a new bull calf that I was sure she had calved.
Black Angus cow and newborn calf.We welcome this new bull to the farm, General Lee. We believe he was born on 5/11/2018 and judging from his brothers and sisters, weighed in at 75 lbs.
Now we are waiting for one last cow to calve for the season.
