Spelunking Angus Style
The herd needs to cross the river when they are being moved from one pasture area to another. We let the herd take their time so the mothers can calmly take their babies across.
There is a hollow area beneath a big, old maple tree that the winter-time high water washes out. The cave gets a little bigger each year, it is now big enough for ten calves to stand under there all at once. One of these winters the river will claim this old tree and the ground that held it fast. But for now, it is a spot to investigate for the young calves.
After exploring the cave, and rubbing in the soft dirt to coat their faces, the calves join their mothers crossing the river to a new field of sweet grass.
