It’s a Boy for Topanga

Angus cow with babyTopanga was missing from the herd on April 16th. She was not hard to find. Topanga has a very loud voice and she is not afraid to use it. Walking down to the brushy vegetation toward the river we found mother and baby, with little Coulee trying to nurse for the first time.

The buck brush around alder trees kept getting in the way of his first meal and he was getting frustrated by things slapping around his head as he searched for a milk-producing spigot. Topanga was bellowing, she wanted him to get on with the feeding instead of fussing around. We guided the pair to an open area of grass under the large maple trees and mealtime began in earnest. Topanga and baby both quieted down quickly and peace was once again restored to the herd.

Coulee weighed in at about 82 lbs. at birth and has been growing steadily since. He will nurse and graze with his mother and the other cow/calf pairs throughout the summer.
