Mosquito Control

Mosquitoes have already started showing up in abundance this year. The winter was not cold enough to wipe out the bugs. They started buzzing around, in a sluggish/dopey way, late in February. We installed a couple of bug zappers and loaded up on goldfish.

The goldfish are put into all the stock tanks. The standing water in the tanks are good breeding ground for mosquitoes. The goldfish eat the larvae and the maturing bugs. We would much rather buy fish than spray areas to kill the mosquitoes.

Comments from visitors who had never seen fish in water tanks before remark with disbelief at the little bug catchers. We let them know that the fish are very happy keeping the mosquito population under control and that the cows do not bother the fish as they drink from the tanks.

We have one fish that is easily three inches long, he has been doing his job 24/7/365 for several years now.  He has survived freezing weather and low water and yet he keeps on plugging away. He has earned the right to have the biggest stock tank all to himself.
