In the Fields

Our Winter Mix Week

The weather guessers had been spouting the possibility of a good winter storm this week. Here at the farm we were seeing reports of up to four inches of snow accumulation.

Our weather mix this week was not that cold or that moisture packed. We did see a couple of days with snow, and the county snow plow did make it up our our road once, but the inches did not hang around too long. From the other side of the mountain where Timber Road meets Highway 6, slick conditions created a bumper car pile up and the highway was closed for most of one morning to clear the damage and await a couple of degrees of thawing.

Our bridge to cross the river was pretty darn slick on two of the mornings. Frozen snow or ice crystals on the metal deck, that had been fashioned out of two railroad boxcars, can become a skating rink even before the roads start to have problems. Mike had to run the Gator in four wheel drive and low range in order to get up the incline segment of the bridge. After the chores the slide down the incline was thrilling.

It was nice to see the fields decked out in white for a little while at least. The trees on the hillside held onto their pretty mantle for a good day and a half before the snow slowly melted.

We had the same snow event here: Just enough to be beautiful and not a problem to anyone. By turning our Christmas lights on in the early morning when it was dark enough to show the lights, I was able to take a snowy picture to send to friends in Canada who always sport snow this time of year.
