Beyond the FarmConservation and StewardshipIn the Fields

Point Of Reference

The bright fall colors seem a little drab this year. Those scorching hot dry days took a toll on deciduous and evergreens, the yard and garden.

I took a series of snapshots of the one tree that tends to stand out when the days turn to colder seasons.

Rather than showing gold, orange and red, the big leaf maple trees seem to drain the green out of their leaves leaving shades of yellow as their autumn tribute.

The big leaf maples are not the only trees that are fading this season. I

have been searching the vine maples that are tucked in and around the tall fir trees.

Ones that were protected from the blistering sun are showing their signature red leaves. It doesn’t seem to be with the same intensity of the wild riot seen most years but they are giving it a good try.

And as for the big leaf maples, I will still be keeping and eye on their beauty and their stick-to-it attitude and their attempts at brightening the end of summer.

Maybe I go looking for my rose colored glasses to get a better perspective.
