Big Tomatoes Too

The pinky tomatoes have been a real treat, but the bigger size tomatoes have been producing also.

After the late freeze we had in the spring, the frenzy of replanted resulted in quite a mash-up of plants that are not our usual in varieties.

Some of the plants in the garden center had lost or misplaced tags and we found that what we thought were one variety of cucumber being one completely different than we had expected. Tomatoes were the same way. That is how I think we got the pinky tomatoes and some of the heirloom varieties like the ones in the picture.

The cucumbers did not do so well and died out quickly, but the tomatoes have produced wonderfully well. The long dry summer was just what the larger sized ones needed (note, the green colored ones and really dark one at the top of the picture are completely ripe they make for really interesting salads and are delicious).

My tomatoes were late, but plentiful. I have declared an end to my harvest after making all the various sauces and juice I can use and have turned the rest over to my neighbor. How did you figure out when to pick the odd-colored ones? I had a plant like that once and lost most of them waiting too long to pick.

Those heirlooms are tricky. The best way to tell is with a slight squeeze while they are still on the vine. They feel ripe when they start to soften.
