Blackberries Up

blackberriesIn between my other chores, I am sneaking out to snag a few blackberries.

They are just beginning to really come on strong. The cows can be seen from time to time with their head in the thick hedgerow eating the sweet berries one at a time by wrapping their tongue around a good one and avoiding the sharp barbs of the thorns.

While I pick the farm dogs are eating the lower berries as fast as they can. The dogs don’t reach in quite as far as the cows but sure do love to get some of the sweet fruit.

Last year at this time I was able to make up a batch of ten pies. Nine of them went straight into the freezer while I left one for fresh eating. This year, time and freezer space is limited to the extra berries will be spread out on cookie sheets to freeze then packed in freezer bags. The pie making will be able to happen throughout the winter rather than having the pies already made just needing to be thawed.

Those nasty Himalayans are good for something, but their flavor can never match those ankle grabbers.

At lease Himalayans are good for something, but their flavor can never match those ankle grabbers.
