Kale And Zucchini Anyone?
End of July and the garden is producing nicely since we have been watching the moisture levels daily and hand watering all the little plants. The cows are getting wheelbarrow loads of kale and zucchini so they do not get overgrown.
The raspberries have been keeping us busy with daily bowls of fruit. We have been eating them on pancakes in the morning, in yogurt during the day and on or in desserts for dinner while still freezing a quart bag full every two to three days. My freezer is looking pretty red now that the raspberry season is dwindling down.
The yellow transparent apple tree is just loaded this year. I should have thinned the fruit earlier in the year but didn’t have the heart to do so, now the tree is so thick that the apples will be small compared to a regular year which will make for peeling them for pies and dehydrating harder. The apple have been beginning to fall and the two bulls in the bull pen get them chopped up and mixed in with their dinner. They beg for those bits of apple. Just a couple of weeks ago, they seemed so ho-hum about getting into the barn for the evening meal and tended to dawdle before moseying out to the barn. Now they come running in hopes that the apples are ready when they get there.
Daily tomatoes, zucchini, kale, lettuce, cucumbers and occasionally beets are making their way to our dinner plates in the house.
The beans are loaded with blooms but are slow to set on, but it may be one of our group has been sneaking out into the garden to eat the very tender one inch wonders right as they are picked rather than gathering them for a side dish. It is a favorite around here. Not to worry though, soon enough there will be enough beans to eat, freezer and share with whoever stops by!
