Easier Without Cows In The Way
Last week we had moved the main herd back across the Rabbit Run to the far, far field for grazing. The time they were closer to the mangers and barn gave the area around the fenced hay field time to grow since we had a little rain and warmer, spring type weather.
Taking advantage of the herd being out of the area, Mike had been working on getting some logs to the landing. Our official permit allows us to ford the river with the log truck beginning June 1st this year (it varies from year to year on weather patterns for expecting wet or dry conditions and the water level of the river). We are hoping to have the first truck load ready to ship shortly after June 1st.
We are not yet in fire season in this area but there are a couple of counties that have already entered into restrictions. While the cows are away and the dangers are low, we are trying to get a jump on this year’s summer of harvesting.
While Mike concentrates on the logs, I am helping keep the landing cleaned up by removing chunks that are not viable for the mill and processing them into firewood pieces. The pieces will be stacked for dying and curing to be used on the firewood project in the winter time.
The trees that we are working on is that small patch just above a good grazing area for the main herd when they are on this side of the river. It is nice not to have to move critters away from our area, or dodge fresh cow patties while we work.
The herd can see us working on this area of the hillside and bellow at us from the far, far field since they are about ready to be moved again. We have one more day of logging for us before we bring the herd back over.
Is Mike using Dang (or Dancer) to cut the logs? Haven’t heard anything about his new-to-him machine.
