Lime Time
Mike started to spread lime onto the far, far field in anticipation of hay season at the end of June. Adding lime to the grass this time of year gives the ground a boost of minerals and greens up the grass. The dampness of April should work the pelletized lime into the roots of the grass and improve spring grazing as well as our hay crop.
The far, far field has been unused for winter while the river has been too high for the cattle to cross. Spring with its warmer weather and less intense storm systems brought the river level down considerably. Two of the three crossings are still too deep for the newest calves in the herd but one crossing is close to be low enough for passage with even the smallest of the herd.
After this far, far field has been limed and rained in we can move the main herd over for grazing. That is once we fix all the elk damaged fences, we are seeing very pronounced trails where the roving herds have been running right through our barriers and dragging wire both ways from the tortured fence.
While we have the main herd grazing safely in the far, far field we will get back to applying lime to the nursery field and the six acre field while the main herd is away.
