Layers And Layers
Our accumulation of snow from our Polar Vortex event is quite impressive. We did have some wind as the majority was coming down but I hear it was much less of a problem here than in some areas of the State.
Even with less wind issues, some of the drifts are well over my tall farm boots while other areas are only 6-8 inches. The roofs of the barns are even swooped and divot-ed with wild hairdo shaped snow. Elvis would have been envious.
The moisture came down in many forms. Sometimes it would fall as miniature flakes, with other times wetting the power lines with rain and freezing as it hit. Then it would snow platter-sized flakes that added up quickly only to change to a sleety grapple for an hour or two. I heard the description of our accumulation as lasagna snow for all the layers and think that is a very appropriate expression of the landscape.
Yesterday, with the moderating temperatures and rain coming in waves between brilliant sunbursts, I was in the barn splitting the pile of wood we had cut just before the storm started.
As a side note; I have to give Mike credit for this pile in the barn. He really had to cajole in order to get me motivated enough to consider stockpiling an amount before the storm turned the farm into a winter wonderland. I really didn’t expect that the weather guessers were right and was not enthused about cutting wood in the rain storm.
Anyway, back to the story, as I was in the barn splitting there was a tremendous noise. It sounded like a jetliner was revving up for takeoff. It was really loud even over the sound of the splitter and my ear plugs. It startled the six cow/calf pairs that were trying to finish their morning meal inside the barn where they have gone to seek shelter from the snow that is so hard to walk in. The cows bellowed for their babies and looked like they were in the process of making a flanking bolt toward the doorway when the noise stopped.
All the wild and crazy-waved roof snow slid off in one huge slide. It slid off into a pile that is up to six feet deep in the side barnyard pasture.
