In the Woods

Yup The Guessers Were Right

Day 1 of Polar Vortex

With the mild and surprisingly beautiful weather we were having last week, I held out that the Weather Guessers were full of hooey. I should have been more cautious with my hooey-flinging for we are now in the middle of a full-blown, Polar Vortex.

The system started off slow, reports of snowflakes here and there around the Portland Metropolitan area and in both the the mountain ranges on either side, the Coast Range and the Cascades. The colder weather began arriving on the second day with snow dumping all night over the frozen, crunchy first layer.

If this weather event would not have happened as the predictions indicated, we would be in the woods today with our batch of seedling fir and cedar trees. However, the seedlings did not get ‘lifted’ from their comfy nursery beds and the process of getting the trees from the nursery to the farm will not happen for at least a week or maybe more. At that time the push will be on to get the seedlings in quickly before springtime weather wakes the plants from their dormant stage.
