#41 Ruby And Flip Wilson
Mike had used one of the last nice weather days to do a grain run down the Willamette Valley to Rickreall. That means I was on my own for the morning chores.
Everything was usual in the show barn and the bull pen. When I drove the Gator over the bridge for the chores across the river, I noticed #41 Ruby standing away from the other cow/calf pairs in the nursery field. Ruby had delivered a set of twins last year so I wanted to make sure to keep an eye on her this year, just in case.
I fed hay to the five cow/calf pairs then went back across the field to where Ruby was standing. It was obvious she was in active labor, she would arch her back at a contraction and give a little grunt. But between contractions, she would act like she wanted to nibble on the hay I had in the back of the Gator for the rest of the main herd. I gave her a good sized slab and she began eating in earnest, stopping only when a contraction hit.
She was practical about the whole thing, she was really beginning to get down to the birthing process, but when a girl is hungry, a girl is hungry. She finished her meal then paced for a while before settling comfortably in the grass and pushed out a good sized bull calf. Ruby took no down time and got him groomed quickly.
Welcome to the farm, bull calf Flip Wilson born 2/10/21, weighing in at 90 lbs. He is a nice, stout calf with big legs and big feet.
