Frosted
Ok, I get it. My readers have been sending in requests for some snow pics, particularly snow with cow pics. I’m not sure if they really believe the cattle are enjoying the weather or if they just want to see how easy it is to find a Black Angus in a snowstorm.
For those of you who are still worried that the critters are not happy and healthy during this wintery weather, let me remind you that they are wearing luxurious fur coats and have been comfortably living outdoors for millennia. I, on the other hand, wear two pair of long johns, two pair of woolly socks with neoprene Muck boots, multi-layers of shirts, a wind breaker jacket layered with a down coat covered by a waterproof raincoat just to get an hour or so of work done outside. The pelts on the critters look pretty cozy to me, but back to the story…
As for the day of snow itself, most pictures came out a blurry, blue-y, haze once the white stuff really started to add up. It was coming down solid all afternoon and into evening but the temperature remained above freezing so the accumulation was building up while it was melting from underneath.
We had to keep the Gator in 4-wheel drive to traverse the driveway and county road, cross the bridge and over to feed the evening meal for the cow/calf pairs and for the main herd in the outdoor feeders.
The next day, while the snow still showed a beautiful white blanket, the cow/calf pairs in the nursery field preferred to be fed outside. We realized this fact when we were loading the Gator in the barn and they all stayed outside rather than come into the manger area for feeding. The calves were scooting around the cows, kicking up their heels and clumps of snow were flying off their little hooves as they darted around. Once they got a good run in they would stop to eat a bite or two of hay before taking off again when one of them would get an urge.
The main herd that had been clumped under the tall fir trees on the hillside during the night, moved the short distance down to the outdoor feeders and waited for us to Gator their meal out to them.
