CattleIn the Barn

A Little Light In The Head

We were able to get the herd sire Prowler and the four weaner calves moved over from the main herd to the show barn with the stock trailer. By opening the back door of the trailer, all five stepped out and into the pen in the barn. After moving the pickup and trailer out of the pasture field, we opened the gate of the barn and let Prowler saunter out and around to the other side of the barn where the two show cows reside (now minus their calves that had been weaned last month).

It is now time to start the pampering process with the four newly weaned calves. In the bunch there are two bulls, one steer and one heifer. As soon as we moved big Prowler out of their pen, we fluffed upĀ  several bales of hay and scattered some grain pellets on the top. All four of the calves were sticking their heads in the stanchions and happily nibbling away. I was able to lock the stanchions (head gates) long enough to begin extracting the green weaner clips that we inserted last week to begin the weaning process.

weaned calves in pen eating hayI was able to remove the clips from the steer and the two bulls, but the heifer has a head that is just a bit smaller than the other three pen mates and she can slip out of the stanchions. We will have to corral her in a corner to remove her clip, but until then she will eat just fine with her jewelry still intact.
