CattleIn the Barn

On Second Thought

cat attempting to bring mouse into barnOne of the feral barn cats, one of The Striped Ones, was announcing a catch of the day as it carried a mouse from the fence line across the pasture and toward the barn where I was preparing to feed the show cows. It was not quite a meow, because of the clinched jaw holding the prey, nor was it a growl as cats are quick to do when encroached upon. It was a signal to show off the prowess of the great hunter, but it also alerted the other cats in the barn that an eminent meal was approaching.

The Striped Cat realized the error as it began to bring the mouse to the gate, the other cats were lining up ready to take advantage. Without letting anyone get too close, The Striped Cat turned and hauled the mouse back across the field to eat in peace. The cats in the barn abandoned the kitty kibble to follow the fresh harvest but came back to finish the dry meal after they were quickly banished by The Striped Cat. They rest of the barn cats will have to go in search of their own hot meal rather than trying to live off the prowess of the hunter cat.
