Safely In Nursery Field

After the exciting ride (for the new calf that is, I was just trying to hold on and keep the calf from jumping off the side of the pallet), we made it across the river with the Softly right beside us the whole way.

The name NinetyNine is in reference to Agent 99 from the old TV show Get Smart, and also happens to be the ear tag number that Softly wears. It will be easy to remember the name for this newest heifer because everything matches up so well.

cow and newborn calf in fieldThe tractor made for an easy move across the river over to the nursery field were the new family has many acres of wide open pasture to roam without being disturbed by the rest of the main herd. The two month old calf, Francie, who has been with the main herd all of her life, is spending quality time along the fence row investigating the new baby. It is still undetermined if we will move Francie and her mother in with this pair or leave these two by themselves until the next calf is born.

The first night that NinetyNine and her mother spent in the nursery field, they were visited by a herd of about 40 elk so the open acre pasture may not have felt so big after all.

Seems like the resident elk also want to check out the new arrival. I wonder if some of them remember the cow birthing season on your farm?
