Getting To The End Of Logging
We have had a stretch of good weather which gave us time to put in extra effort to get the last of the logs out of the woods before the fall rains begin in earnest. Every moment we are not busy with other farm chores, we have been up in the forest or working in the landing. Once the rains start, we will be unable to get up into the forest other than on foot and neither Mike or I are able to drag the logs down without power equipment.
It has been a glorious week, shirtsleeve weather and bright sunshine. Gone are the smoky, hazy, hot days of just a few weeks ago when the fire danger was so high we could not even go into the woods.
The last of the trees for this year have now been felled by Mike. I was good at supervising and using wedges to keep the tree leaning the correct direction. The dogs were busy the whole week by running through the woods and digging for burrowing critters in the soft dirt.
Still to go are several trips with both the dozer and the Gator to snag those smaller logs that will be added to the log deck for the firewood project. We will continue to race the weather to see how much of that we can get to the landing before Mother Nature intercedes.
