Update On Paulette’s Calf

After the heartbreak of losing our oldest cow Paulette this last week, I am so happy to tell you a little about her calf #54 Hopper.

calf with head stanchions Hopper was within a month of being weaned during our next go-round when his mother sustained the injury that took her from us. Since he is at that stage where he does not need his mother’s milk any longer, it was an easy transition for him to learn about the barn and getting all the hay and grain that he wanted. We only kept him in the show barn for four days while he learned about the head stanchions. He found our quickly that it was simple to lift his head to drop it into the head gate and when finished eating to lift his head to get back out of stanchion. (Many of the weaning animals take up to a week to figure out that they won’t get strangled as the bars clank when they stick their heads inside).

He was doing so well in the show barn that we moved him out to the bull pen where #41 (My Stalker) and newly weaned bull #48 who is just two months older than Hopper. The three bulls are getting along well.

When I was out in the barn today bundling firewood, My Stalker happened to be resting over by the fence when bot #48 and Hopper did a little sneaking over to the barn for a bite without the bigger bull. In a stealthy maneuver, I poured a little grain in pans for the two younger bulls being careful not to make the normal sounds of scooping and dropping into the pans. The two young bulls ate in peace while My Stalker dozed!

When Mike came out to the bull barn about an hour later, all three animals followed the trail to the feeding area and ate as if the younger ones had not had a delicious snack earlier. We are thrilled that Hopper is transitioning well and gaining weight.
