CattleIn the Fields

Finding His Own Way

One of the tasks we never got around to completing during the winter months has turned into a treat for one of the bull calves. We noticed one of the calves as we were driving over the bridge headed for the hay field.

The calf, I believe his tag was #55 (but to be honest, that recollection was from more than an hour ago so the accuracy may be iffy at best. But it does not distract from the story so I will continue as if it is correct…) Anyway, #55 found out that if he was real careful he could step up the big pile of spent canes, dirt and woody debris that Mike had made with the bulldozer after grubbing out most of the blackberry hedge.

Normally all the tender tips of the hedge stick up above the ground some ten to twelve feet, way above the reach of cows and especially too high for the shorter calves.

#55 braved the pile that was supposed to be burned during the wet season that had now sprouted the succulent tips that the critters love to munch on. The bull calf found fairly solid footing and stood at the top of the pile. He was well above the cow that stood on solid ground below him, yet he was still below the level of the bridge (at 16 feet high) where I was on the Gator.

#55 had the tender tips all to himself then somehow figured how to get off the precipice unhurt because we saw him later in the day back in with the rest of the herd. I thought I saw satisfaction in his face of a critter that just had a filling, delicious meal.

Reminds me of when I was a kid with snow crusted on the ground and the adults were having a terrible time breaking through the snow knee deep with every step and I could walk along on the top with my small frame. Kudos to the calf for experiencing this delight.
