One Of Those

This is going to be one of those posts without pictures attached. For those of who are reading on the old website, that is normal, but for you who are following from the new website of SchmidlinAngusFarms or Social Media, you may wonder what is going on and why I did not get photos.

There are many reasons for the lack of proof, you are going to have to just take my word for it or ask Mike when you see him. The later may get you an earful of blue words strung together but it may make a funny story to tell since Mike does not use proper grammer when stringing foul words together, and more often than not, the fragmented sentences are not even viable or physically possible and are completely illogical. OK now that I have given you all the disclaimers you need, let me tell you the story.

The weather has taken an immediate turn to summer. The comfortable, misty days of the last couple weeks (and I know I had been complaining about the mud…) has turned very warm indeed. We are cooler at the farm than down in the valley but even we are in the 90 degree and up category.

The cows are taking to hanging out under the shade of the huge big leaf maple trees and as close to the river as they can get. The water level is dropping on the river and there was an immediate need to get the fences across before we had the whole herd splashing their way right off the property.

As I told you about in an earlier post when the water was nearly frigid, the temps of the river are now only chilly instead of ice cold. With the high temps, the idea of cool feet and legs while we work sounded quite nice. Mike and I still wear boots for good footing on slippery river rock, jeans are a must so the barb wire does not snag our flesh along with leather gloves and long sleeves. Or rather Mike had long sleeves, I dared to go with a tank top because the weather was so nice. We both jettisoned our electronics and tucked them safely in the Gator, well away from the river since I am prone to getting wetter than expected.

I waded in first to go across to find the part of the fence that broke away during the high water of winter. The fences are made to break away and if we are lucky, can find enough of the pieces to restring the wire from the anchor posts on both sides of the river. All of the fence was on the far side from where we had access to the water, so the first job (my job) was wade across and untangle all the mud and debris like beaver sticks and grassy vegetation from the wires to pull the whole thing across the river. Mike was in charge of cargo-ing the posts, post driver and an extra spool of wire.

Man, those rocks are slick. I heard a mighty splash behind me. The blue words started spewing forth. Jackson the dog thought we were throwing things for him to retrieve and jumped in to haul something out of the water in the midst of the flailing about and general upheaval. I gave a shout out to see if all was unhurt, apparently pride was the only damage aside from bruises and sore muscles that began protesting after a night of sleep.

Mike was not a happy camper and then he accused me of laughing at him. I DID NO SUCH THING. I may have snickered, chuckled, silently guffawed and covered up a thought about glad it wasn’t me, but I did not laugh. And I had a lot of thoughts about if only I had my camera…

Stay cool everyone.

I can just imagine the blue words if you had managed to get a picture of Mike flailing around and then posted it. Fortunately, my imagination was enough to get a mental image and a bit of a chuckle. You didn’t state it, but I’m sure the fence eventually got fixed.

    • Oh Yes! We didn’t quit until the property was secure, for now…
