Learning From The Elders
The calves in with the main herd are doing well and learning new things every day. The older calves are teaching the newer ones how to kick up their heels and go scooting off around the herd and causing great distress to the mothers in the herd.
The new ones are watching theĀ cows as they graze and eat hay that we throw out during feeding times. The young calves are nibbling on grass spears hear and there and are taking some of those first bites of hay.
The newest four or five calves were busy watching one of the mother cows as she was eating big mouthfuls of hay the other day. But the calves were not imitating what the cow was doing but rather grabbing at what she was already trying to chew. It was quite comical to watch the handful of calves get right in close enough to grab a spear or two out of the cow’s mouth. Once one calf tried the maneuver, each of the calves would step up and try their hand, er mouth, at the snatch and grab.
The cow who was being pestered by the group of calves just went about her business of eating and paid no attention to them at all. She was a lot more patient than I ever was at the family dinner table!

Those calves must have been watching mother birds feed their babies and decided to give it a try – mouth to mouth
They were pretty darn cute, and the cow which was only a mother to one of them, seemed contented to share!
