#92 Pearl And Crystalline

We drove the Gator across the bridge to the barn to load the morning hay for both the nursery field with cow/calf pairs and for the remaining main herd that use the outdoor feeders.

As we fed out the slabs in the nursery field, we chuckled over the antics of the young calves as they scooted around the hay and the mothers. One would get a wild idea and take off on a quick race around the group, or zip in between those eating like a speedy obstacle course before settling down to try a bite or snuggle down for a snooze while the bigger critters eat.

If the main herd is down along the back of the big field, up under the tall trees of the hillside, across the river or down along the six acre field, they come straggling along to the outdoor mangers and are usually there waiting for their meal by the time we have finished feeding in the nursery field. This morning the herd was slow to arrive and was still trailing up from the muddy path along the six acres.

We fed hay in the mangers and did a quick count. #92 was missing. Mike was sure that she was probably down along the trail where the rest of the main herd had come from. We drove down through the six acres and sure enough she was tucked under a large alder tree with a new calf by her side.

While Mike brought the Gator through the field, I moved #92 Pearl and her baby the mucky, limb strewn path that the main herd had just navigated. The little calf was a trooper but got tripped up several times by deep mud holes or large tree roots just under the surface. I tripped a couple of times myself but we all made it up to the nursery field where #92 walked her new calf into the clean grass where she could eat a well deserved meal.

Welcome to the farm Crystalline, born 3/2/21. She is a cute but tough heifer calf weighing in at 78 lbs. It took only hours in the nursery field for Pearl to get her new baby introduced to the wild bunch of calves and by the second day, Pearl was trying to run when the others played.
