#89 Marlo And AnnMarie

man in dense foliage looking for a cowIt was a beautiful day on the farm and two were missing from the herd when we did a count of critters. #89 had been close to calving when we brought the herd back from the far, far field so we had been expecting her to deliver soon. But when the count came back as two animals gone we first thought a cow/calf pair had wandered away from the herd and that the mother was probably nursing her calf and the pair was slow to join up with herd.

Mike checked the herd again and didn’t see Marlo in the bunch so we went in search of her. One of the cows that had been eating hay began to bellow like she was calling her calf. On closer inspection we realized the one making all the noise was #99, the mother to famous/infamous KAOS bull calf that terrorizes newborns and their mothers.

man with cow in dense brushIt was obvious that the four month old KAOS was up to his old tricks. We went in search of KAOS using him like a gps system to track down the location of #89. It was cow #99, who with her insistent calling, got the attention of KAOS who meandered out of the heavy brush line down by the river to nurse.

Mike headed down into the thick brush but was unable to locate #89 at first. We drove back and forth several times with the Gator but could not see anything, then Mike followed the dogs heading down one of the cattle paths and found #89 with a newborn protected in a dense clump of snowberry bushes.

We left the pair comfortable in their lair while making sure KAOS couldn’t come back to bother them.

cow and newborn in with herdWelcome to the farm, heifer AnnMarie weighing in at 73 lbs. born on 5/25/2020. We named her AnnMarie after the character Marlo Thomas played on That Girl.

PS it took several days for Marlo and AnnMarie to join the herd. Marlo was very protective and kept the baby safely hidden from KAOS while she got stronger and steadier on her feet. The pair are now part of the main herd.
