Leaning To And Fro
Our fence posts have seen better days. The snow buildup has sent many of them askew and even some of the straighter fence lines before the snow week are showing the stress.
During this weather we are simply maintaining by digging out electric fence lines from deep drifts, righting metal posts that have been bent over, replacing one that broke off at ground level and propping the larger cedar posts that are leaning precariously. The cows find that scratching annoying itches on metal posts is a dandy pastime and in so doing, loosen the post from the ground and also push the post lower into the dirt/mud. A post lifter is needed on many of them so they can be reset more firmly by driving them into firmer ground.
Once we can get around the fields again we will need at least a day to assess of the fence line then work the worst areas first by repairing and replacing posts and fixing broken wires.
That fence mending does not sound like fun at all. At least the cattle aren’t thinking that the grass is greener on the other side of the fence – it’s still snow everywhere – so they won’t be tempted to walk through the sagging/broken parts of the fence.
